Sit-in and demonstrations by workers, citizens, students and religious group have surrounded the parliament since March, to stop the bills which strengthening Japan-U.S. military alliance. As 50 thousands workers and people attended the May 21 rally against the bills, the movements to stop the way to war has upsurged.
In spite of the wave of anti-war movements, Japanese capitalist government, the Liberal Democratic Party and its junior coalition partner, Jiyuto (Liberal Party), and its noncabinet alliance force, New Komeito, enforced, at last, a set of bills related to the Japan-U.S. defense cooperation guidelines to be passed in the plenary session of the House of Councillors on May 24. While Minshuto (Democratic Party of Japan) only partly opposed the bills, Japan Communist Party and the Social Democratic Party opposed all the bills to the Japan-U.S. defence guidelines.
Although diet enacts defence bills, the legislation will become meaningless if local government and private organizations refuse to offer their facilities when they are asked to do so by the government. Therefore, it is important to strengthen movements to reject any support involving the military use of ports and airports, the transport of goods for war, the military use of institutions such as hospitals.
Solidifying the three-party framework, capitalist government made wiretap bills to be adopted by the Judicial Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives on May 28. While LDP-LP-NK try to pave the way for their passage during the current Diet sessionm, these bills that would permit wiretapping during investigations into so-called organized crimes are should be scrapped.
Furthemore, the government and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party decided May 17 to submit a bill formally recognizing the Hinomaru (Rising Sun) and the Kimigayo as the national flag and anthem to the current Diet session. This Flag, Anthem Bill is also to pave way to aggressive war.
